Progress BB6 Fairway Wood

Progress BB6 Fairway Wood Review

Progress BB6 Fairway Wood
Recently, I tested this golf club.

The test club is the Progress BB6 Fairway Wood 3-wood.

FUJIKURA SPEEDER NX
The shaft is the FUJIKURA SPEEDER NX.

It has a loft of 15 degrees, a shaft flex of S, and a total club weight of 325g.

Front View
The BB6 Fairway Wood is a very stylish club.

I’ve tested the driver before, and the design is quite similar, showcasing great consistency.
It’s a cool-looking club, but beyond its aesthetic appeal, the distinctive design makes it immediately recognizable as a BB6.

BB6 ENDLESS AMBITION
The sole features the phrase “BB6 ENDLESS AMBITION.”
This is also the same as the driver.
The clear vision and philosophy of the manufacturer are commendable.

Side View
It’s a compact, shallow-profile spoon.
While there are many intricate design elements, it maintains a classy and stylish look.
It strikes a balance between ruggedness and approachability.

Ribbed Sole
The ribbed pattern on the sole stands out significantly.
This is a unique feature not seen in other brands.

Rib Depth
The depth of the ribs, or grooves, isn’t particularly significant.

Neck Length
The neck length is moderate but relatively long compared to other modern fairway woods.

Toe Weight
Heel Weight & Neck Adjustment System
Weights are positioned on both the toe and heel sides, but their specific weights aren’t indicated.
Additionally, the neck features an adjustable system, just like the driver.
While I don’t place much importance on adjustable systems, I recognize their demand among golfers, with some considering them a decisive factor when purchasing a club.

N Position
I tested the club in the “N” position.

There are various other positions, identical to the driver.

Face Design
The clean and elegant face design is characteristic of Progress.
The white alignment line is flat, and the areas without color at both ends and the bottom form grooves.

Shallow Head
While familiar and reflective of current trends, the head appears quite shallow.
There was a time when spoons were deep like drivers, with shallow heads reserved for baffies or cleeks.
However, now shallow heads dominate both spoons and drivers.
This prevalence of shallow designs likely correlates with the trend toward lower spin golf balls.

Face View
The face has a slight draw bias, which caught me off guard.
I had anticipated a perfectly neutral and aesthetically pleasing face but found this difference surprising.
It has a “hook face” appearance.
For larger heads, a hook face can help counteract pushes, but for a compact head like this, I’m not sure it’s necessary.
Perhaps this design caters to a preference for draw-biased faces, which seems prevalent among Japanese manufacturers. Conversely, overseas brands appear to favor a more neutral setup.

Carbon Crown
The crown is made of carbon composite.
While using a carbon crown can sometimes cheapen the look of a club, this fairway wood maintains a high-quality, sophisticated appearance.
The matte finish is a particularly nice touch.

Grip
The installed grip is simple and neutral, making it a safe and reliable choice.

Swing Feel
During practice swings, I quickly found my rhythm and timing with this club.

At Address
At address, I felt quite uncomfortable with this club.
The issue wasn’t so much the hook face but the shape of the neck.
It reminded me of a design trend from the past, sometimes referred to as “tarako” (cod roe), which hasn’t been common in recent years.

Neck Design

Neck Design
Why was the neck designed this way?
It gave me a sense of unease and a nearly hopeless feeling that this club might not be for me.
I can only assume there’s a significant reason behind this unique neck design.

Test Shots

Progress BB6 Fairway Wood
My first shot was a big hook.
However, this was entirely due to my own errors and not the club’s fault.
The discomfort I felt at address affected my mental state, leading to a poorly executed shot.
While this club naturally has a draw bias, the extreme hook I hit was largely the result of my unsettled mindset.

Watching the ball veer sharply left, I was reminded of how much mental focus impacts golf performance.
For those who don’t feel uneasy about this club at address, it should be easy to hit great shots.
Unfortunately, I let my own trepidation take over, resulting in an erratic performance.
I stepped away from the hitting bay, took a short break, and drank a can of coffee to reset my mind before resuming the test.
Testing Resumed

Face
The “feel” of this club is firm but not overly hard, which I found very pleasant.

Impact Sound
The sound is not overly loud and is quite pleasant.
It matches the club’s premium look and feel.

Toe
The ball launches very easily.
Even hitting shots directly from the ground, I achieved a high trajectory.
Among today’s fairway woods, this one stands out for its ease of launch.
However, its shallow design might require some care when teeing up.

Back Face
Stability is excellent.
While my first few shots were erratic due to my mental state, as I continued testing, my performance improved, and I was able to hit more consistent shots.
The sweet spot feels quite large, and the club isn’t overly demanding.
Still, I couldn’t quite overcome my discomfort with the way it looks at address.

Distance Performance
The distance performance is excellent.
The ball launched easily and carried well with plenty of energy.
I would describe this as an “easy-to-hit, distance-oriented fairway wood.”

Workability
Workability is decent.
It’s more of an automatic club than a manual one, but I was still able to shape shots both ways.
For my swing, natural draws are easy, but slicers might find this club delivers straighter shots that are more in line with their desired trajectory.

Final Impressions

Heel Side
It’s been a while since I’ve encountered a club I found so difficult to set up with.
In most cases, my struggles with setup stem from face angle or head shape, but in this instance, it was entirely the neck design.
The driver I tested before didn’t have this issue, so I’m curious whether other fairway wood models (e.g., the 5-wood) are the same.

Progress BB6 Fairway Wood
With its black-themed design, the club looks stunning but feels approachable rather than intimidating.
It has excellent forgiveness, launches the ball high, and is an easy-to-use fairway wood.

Progress BB6 Fairway Wood
The carbon crown raises questions about how much discretionary weight it allows and where that weight has been redistributed.
I suspect much of it has been allocated to the large weights on the toe and heel.

Progress BB6 Fairway Wood
This was my first time testing a Progress fairway wood, having only tested their drivers before.
Although my experience with this club was challenging, I see it as an opportunity to reflect and strengthen my mindset.

Even with clubs I find difficult, I aim to approach future testing with greater confidence and resilience.
I will continue my “testing journey” with passion and commitment.

This design widens the sweet spot, making it easier to maintain distance and direction even on slightly errant shots.

2.2 High Specific Gravity Tungsten Weight
BB6 fairway woods are equipped with a high specific gravity tungsten weight to achieve a low center of gravity design. This weight stabilizes the head and reduces blurring at impact, making directional stability easier. This provides outstanding stability, especially on shots from rough or long grass areas.

The head design of the BB6 fairway wood is designed to give golfers a sense of security at address.
In particular, the head appears large, which has the visual effect of allowing the golfer to focus firmly on the ball.

3.1 High Resilience Face Technology
BB6 fairway woods feature High Resilience Face Technology, which dramatically improves the initial velocity of the ball at impact. This technology provides consistent resilience across the entire face, resulting in less variation in distance.
This ensures consistent flying distance, which is a great benefit for score making, especially on long holes.

3.2 Flex Face Structure
The BB6 fairway woods feature a flex face construction. This technology improves the flexibility of the face, allowing the face to fit tightly to the ball at impact. This stabilizes the launch angle and improves ball flight distance, while at the same time producing a consistent trajectory.

3.3 Sole design for good launch
The sole of the BB6 fairway wood is designed for good release in various lies.
It is especially designed to reduce friction in rough and fairways, allowing the swing to remain smooth all the way to impact. This design allows the club to exit smoothly and produce a powerful trajectory even on shots in grass and sand.

We actually tested the BB6 fairway wood and found its performance to be outstanding. Below is a review of the most noteworthy points.

4.1 Excellent Distance Performance

As a result, the club can achieve outstanding distance for a fairway wood, especially on long holes and tee shots, eliminating the lack of distance.

4.2 High directionality and straightness
This fairway wood has a wide sweet spot, so it is difficult to lose directional control even on slightly errant shots, allowing for stable shots.
The straightness is maintained even on off-center hits, which improves the fairway retention rate and greatly contributes to score making. Strong trajectory can be obtained even on shots from the rough, enabling the player to aim firmly at the green.

4.3 Striking feel and feel
The Progress BB6 fairway wood has an extremely soft feel, and the feel at impact is firmly transmitted to the hand.

The flex face construction provides the necessary spin to make the ball fly straight to the target and stop on the green with ease.
