EPON AF-107 Driver Test Review: A Driver Perfect for EPON Fans Who Love a Smaller, Deeper Head
Today, I tested this golf club.
Tested Club: EPON AF-107 Driver.
The shaft is the FUJIKURA 24 VENTUS BLUE 5 S.
The club length is 45.75 inches, the shaft weight is 59.5g, the balance is D1.5, the torque is 3.4, the kick point is mid-tip, and the total weight of the club is 302g.
This is a simple and beautiful new driver from EPON.
It’s easy to imagine that this is the successor to the AF-106 based on its name and design. The AF-106 was so impressive that it’s still fresh in my memory even after two years. Time has passed quickly, but I still feel its impact. I was very tempted to buy it, but unfortunately, it seems to be discontinued now, and I can no longer purchase it. EPON clubs never get boring, so it would be great if they would re-release older models, and I’m sure many feel the same way.
The sole is rounded, and the head has a thick profile.
And the texture is pure EPON—amazing. Would it be fair to call it a ‘technique that makes metal look soft’? EPON excels at this, and they’ve mastered it.
The design around the back face is distinctive.
This is a rare deep head design these days.
Such heads were common in the past, but they’re hard to find now, especially with the rise of shallow-back designs. This may be intimidating for some players, as deep heads are not as popular now, but there is still a demand for them.
The neck is short.
With this type of head, longer necks used to be the norm, but this driver is different. Perhaps this is the optimal length.
The neck features an adjustment system.
This is rare for EPON, but it’s not without precedent. The AF-157 has it, and even older models like AF-155i had it.
I tested it from the ‘1’ position.
3
5
7
Other positions include 3, 5, and 7. It’s very interesting to see how each adjustment changes things. Adjustment systems like these can vary significantly from manufacturer to manufacturer.
The scorelines on the face are all ‘grooved,’ with depressions.
Now, flat-faced drivers are becoming more common, but this driver features grooves throughout, and the central ‘trapezoid’ area is finely milled. This is also seen in the AF-157 Driver.
It looks pretty compact.
I think this is because of the deep head design, which has been a common feature for a long time. When the design is shallow, the face looks bigger, but by keeping the thickness down, the driver maintains a compact look even with a larger head volume. It has a round, friendly look, but the face also seems slightly closed.
I checked up close to see if it had a carbon crown, but it seems it doesn’t.
It seems like there is a clear line between manufacturers who use carbon crowns and those who don’t. I’m curious about how much a carbon crown can increase distance and affect the trajectory, but I’m not particularly fixated on it.
The grip is moderately soft and provides a good amount of traction, making it suitable for a driver.
The grip end features the EPON logo ‘e,’ which is a great touch for EPON fans.
When I made a few practice swings, the feel was great.
Although the VENTUS is lightweight, it is firm and easy to time. When swinging different drivers, I’ve noticed some shafts make a great sound, while others don’t, and this driver was one of the former.
When setting up the ball, the face appeared to be closed, which made it a bit uncomfortable for me.
The head size is compact and excellent, but I felt like the face was aiming too far left, making it a little hard for me to set up. Unfortunately, I felt like this didn’t quite suit my hook. However, compared to other drivers, it’s not an overly closed face, and I didn’t feel like I was completely “out of options.” It’s possible that “square faces” are currently the trend, but I decided to adjust and align the face more to the right for a better result.
Test Shots Begin
I immediately started hitting hooks, and they came in threes.
I thought it would happen as expected… so I stepped away from the tee and grabbed an iced coffee to take a break, and then I came back to try again. I resumed the test shots.
The ‘feel’ is soft and very nice.
It’s the classic ‘EPON feel’ I was expecting. You could call it the “promised feel”—it’s a traditional, satisfying feeling that never lets us down. Not only does the feel itself shine, but it matches the beautiful texture of the club. I was impressed with the quality, as expected.
The ‘sound’ is perfectly balanced, both in volume and pitch.
This fantastic sound could be called the “EPON sound.” EPON drivers have been known for their beautiful sound, especially with the AF-101, and I’ve trusted EPON for their sound ever since. Other manufacturers often change the sound with new models, and some drivers even produce strange noises, but with EPON, I can hit with confidence and without worry. From all the drivers I’ve tested, the ones that left a strong impression in terms of sound are the AF-101 and the George Spirits GT450 Driver (CRZ450). While there are other great sounding drivers, these two stand out. Drivers that produce strange sounds are rare these days, and the “safe” sounds have become more common. Every time I hit a great sounding driver, it feels like I’ve won a small prize.
As for ‘launchability,’ it’s average to slightly hard.
When setting up, I saw the face well, so I had the impression it would launch high, and when I hit it, the ball did rise as expected, with no surprises. Despite the deep head, the loft was shallow enough to create high launch angles, and the ball flew nicely. However, this driver isn’t marketed as a high-launch driver, and it’s likely better suited for high head speed players.
As for ‘stability,’ it’s average.
I immediately hit three hooks right out of the gate, and each shot went left. This wasn’t the club’s fault but rather due to my swing and mental game. Many players will likely hit excellent straight, fade, or draw shots with this driver. This is not a driver designed for forgiveness or low curvature, so if those are your priorities, this might not be the best fit.
The ‘workability’ is very high and fantastic.
In today’s market where drivers mostly feature high forgiveness and straight-line performance, this one felt refreshingly different. It’s a driver that clearly excels in workability over stability.
I’ve recently struggled with hitting shots right, but this driver allowed me to easily shape shots right, which made it a lot of fun. At address, the face appeared closed, and I hit three hooks, but once I adjusted to an open stance and shaped the shot to the right, it felt like I was playing with the joy of shot shaping.
This driver has no “restrictions” on shot shape due to weight distribution, and it truly lets the player shape their shots. With a clear image of hitting a “banana slice,” I could easily execute it, just as I imagined.
Of course, hitting a hook was even easier. With shallow heads, it’s harder to hit “topped” shots, but with this deep head, there’s still a chance for them to occur. A deep center of gravity may reduce the occurrence of topped shots.
‘Distance performance’ is high.
The ball jumps off the face, and the initial speed is great, sending the ball skyward. Its compact size and ease of capture likely help with the distance.
When pushing the ball right, I didn’t get that unique “gap” feeling, but instead, the club made contact just before impact, sending the ball flying smoothly.
Watching the ball’s strong trajectory as it flew, I felt that when the club is beautiful, the ball flight is beautiful too.
It’s been a while since I’ve encountered a deep driver, and I was reminded of the EPON ZERO Modified Driver and the EPON ZERO Driver.
While shallow heads are popular today, there is definitely still demand for this type of head, and I’m glad I could experience it again.
EPON clubs are known for being exceptional, but because they’re expensive, many golfers might feel reluctant to buy them.
However, with the price gap between major manufacturers and EPON shrinking, it might be a good time to try clubs from a smaller manufacturer like EPON.
After getting fitted, adjusting the shaft to my needs, and customizing the balance, I now have a reliable companion. It’s the “joy of thinking” that you can’t experience with off-the-rack clubs.
A good club undoubtedly leads its owner in the right direction.
One of my friends had been using clubs from a major manufacturer, but after I recommended EPON, he replaced everything from his driver to his putter, even his bag and cap, with EPON gear.
He even set a new personal best and increased his distance. He had thought that his distance was maxed out, but he was thrilled when he managed to extend it. For golfers, distance improvement is an eternal goal. EPON clubs don’t get much media attention, and many experienced golfers have never hit with them.
However, in Japan’s “custom club heaven,” there are countless outstanding manufacturers, and it’s worth trying them out.
I haven’t tested many EPON clubs myself, but after meeting the AF-101, I was completely won over. Of course, golfers and golf clubs have a special relationship, and using EPON won’t necessarily guarantee a personal best or increased distance for everyone.
It’s all about the right match, and I believe that’s key. However, just like my friend, there are golfers who will get excellent results. He became a huge fan of EPON clubs and now owns multiple drivers, two sets of irons, and several FW, UT, and wedges.
He treats his clubs with great care, and I’m glad I recommended them to him. A golfer’s personality shows during play, and the way they treat their clubs also reflects that. Treating your clubs with affection can bring unexpected rewards, and I’ve certainly experienced that.
It was a pleasure to finally get my hands on an EPON driver again, and I had a fantastic time testing it.

Construction Technology and Design Philosophy
Face Technology
The AF-107 utilizes POWER TITANIUM for the face material, which EPON has specifically chosen for its strength-to-weight ratio and impact characteristics. This forged titanium face aims to deliver consistent ball speeds across the hitting area while maintaining the soft feel that EPON drivers are known for throughout the Japanese market.
Body and Crown Construction
The super precision casting process for the body allows EPON to achieve precise weight distribution and consistent wall thickness. The titanium crown contributes to optimal center of gravity positioning while keeping overall head weight at 198g, providing flexibility for custom shaft fitting without compromising swing weight.
Deep Face Design
The deep face profile of the AF-107 serves multiple purposes. It positions the center of gravity lower and deeper in the head, which typically promotes higher launch angles and increased forgiveness on strikes below center. The deeper face also provides more vertical hitting area, beneficial for players with varying attack angles.
Adjustability Features
8-Position Hosel System
The AF-107’s adjustable hosel offers 8 distinct settings, allowing modifications to both loft and face angle. This system enables players to:
- Fine-tune launch conditions without changing shafts
- Adjust for fade or draw bias
- Compensate for different course conditions
- Optimize spin rates based on swing characteristics
The standard configuration features a 0.5° open face angle at 59° lie, but the adjustment range provides options for players who prefer neutral or slightly closed face positions.
Performance Characteristics
Launch and Spin Profile
The deep face design combined with the 460cc volume and low-deep center of gravity positioning creates a launch profile suited for players seeking a mid-high ball flight. The POWER TITANIUM face construction aims to reduce excessive spin that can cost distance for players with higher swing speeds.
Forgiveness and Stability
At 460cc, the AF-107 utilizes the maximum volume allowed under equipment rules, providing substantial perimeter weighting and moment of inertia (MOI). This results in improved stability on off-center strikes compared to smaller driver heads. However, the deep face and traditional shaping prioritize shot-making over maximum forgiveness characteristics found in more draw-biased or oversized-looking designs.
Sound and Feel
EPON drivers are consistently noted for their impact feel and acoustic properties. The combination of forged face, cast body, and titanium crown creates a sound profile that accomplished players typically describe as solid and muted rather than loud or metallic. This sensory feedback allows skilled players to better identify contact location and quality.
Who Should Consider the AF-107?
Ideal Player Profile
The EPON AF-107 is best suited for:
- Swing Speed: 95-110+ mph (better suited to moderate-fast swing speeds)
- Skill Level: Low to mid handicap players (typically single-digit to mid-teens)
- Shot Shape Preference: Players who work the ball both directions and value adjustability
- Priority: Feel, consistency, and shot-shaping over pure forgiveness
- Attack Angle: Neutral to slightly upward attack angles (benefits from deep face design)
Players Who May Want Alternatives
The AF-107 may not be optimal for:
- High Handicap Players: Those seeking maximum slice correction and extreme forgiveness may benefit from more game-improvement-oriented designs
- Very Slow Swing Speeds: Players below 90 mph may struggle to optimize launch conditions with the standard shaft configuration
- Draw-Seeking Players: Golfers fighting a persistent slice might prefer models with more offset or stronger draw bias built into the head design
- Maximum Distance Seekers: Players prioritizing every yard over feel and workability might explore lighter overall weight configurations
Advantages
Precision Manufacturing
Japanese assembly and Endo Manufacturing’s reputation for quality control ensure consistent build quality. Each club receives individual attention during the manufacturing process, reducing variations between production units.
Adjustability Range
The 8-position hosel system provides substantial tuning capability without requiring multiple driver heads. This feature proves valuable when weather conditions change or swing adjustments occur.
Premium Feel
The forged POWER TITANIUM face delivers impact sensations that appeal to skilled players accustomed to high-end Japanese equipment. This tactile feedback helps better players make swing adjustments based on contact quality.
Versatile Profile
The 460cc volume combined with deep face design offers a balance between workability and stability. Players can shape shots while maintaining reasonable forgiveness on mishits.
Build Quality
The mirror finish and attention to detail in assembly reflect EPON’s commitment to premium presentation and durability.
Limitations
Limited Retail Availability
EPON products primarily distribute through specialized Japanese golf retailers and select international custom fitting centers. This limited availability makes trying before purchasing challenging for many golfers outside Japan.
Premium Pricing
Japanese custom equipment typically commands higher prices than mass-market alternatives. The AF-107’s build quality and adjustability come at a cost that exceeds mainstream driver options.
Stock Shaft Limitations
The DEAD OR ALIVE Nagi N65 shaft may not suit all swing profiles. While optional shafts are available, this requires additional consultation and potentially increased cost.
Learning Curve for Adjustability
Players unfamiliar with hosel adjustment systems may need time to identify optimal settings. The 8 positions require systematic testing to determine ideal configuration.
Modest Distance Claims
EPON focuses on consistency and feel rather than marketing maximum distance claims. Players seeking the absolute longest drivers on the market based on manufacturer distance data may look elsewhere.
Distance Expectations by Swing Speed
Important Context
Distance varies significantly based on attack angle, strike location, shaft selection, spin optimization, and individual swing efficiency. The following represents general guidance based on the AF-107’s specifications and typical performance characteristics of drivers in this category.
85-95 mph Swing Speed
- Carry Distance: Approximately 200-230 yards
- Considerations: Players at this speed range should carefully evaluate shaft options. The stock N65 shaft at 67g may require adjustment to optimize launch conditions. Higher lofts (11°) with proper adjustability settings will maximize carry distance.
95-105 mph Swing Speed
- Carry Distance: Approximately 230-260 yards
- Considerations: This represents the optimal speed range for the AF-107’s design. Players can effectively utilize the adjustability system to fine-tune launch and spin. Both loft options (10° and 11°) remain viable depending on attack angle.
105-115 mph Swing Speed
- Carry Distance: Approximately 260-285 yards
- Considerations: Faster swingers benefit from the POWER TITANIUM face’s ability to maintain ball speed on various strike locations. The 10° loft will typically prove optimal, potentially adjusted down via the hosel system. Custom shaft options should be explored to control spin.
115+ mph Swing Speed
- Carry Distance: Approximately 285+ yards
- Considerations: Very fast swing speeds may benefit from customized shaft configurations heavier than the stock offering. The adjustability system helps manage launch and spin, though players at this level should consider professional fitting to maximize the AF-107’s capabilities.
Shaft Compatibility and Custom Options
The AF-107 ships with the DEAD OR ALIVE Nagi N65 as standard equipment. This 67g shaft in S-flex provides a mid-launch, mid-spin profile suitable for a wide range of swing speeds. However, EPON explicitly states that optional shafts are available upon request.
Custom shaft fitting becomes particularly important for:
- Players outside the 95-105 mph swing speed range
- Golfers with specific trajectory requirements
- Those with unique tempo or transition characteristics
EPON dealers can typically accommodate shaft requests from major Japanese manufacturers and international brands. The 198g head weight provides flexibility for shaft weight selection while maintaining desired swing weight.
Comparison Context
Versus Mass Market 460cc Drivers
The AF-107 distinguishes itself through:
- Forged face construction (many competitors use cast faces)
- Japanese assembly and quality control standards
- Adjustability system integrated into premium head design

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What does the 60-degree measurement method mean for club length?
The 60-degree measurement method is a Japanese standard where club length is measured with the sole positioned at 60 degrees relative to horizontal, rather than the 90-degree (vertical) USGA standard. The 45.75-inch measurement using this method translates to a slightly different playing length than a club measured at 45.75 inches via USGA standard.
Q: Can I adjust the AF-107 to reduce my slice?
The 8-position hosel system allows face angle adjustments that can help address slice tendency. However, the AF-107 is not specifically designed as a slice-correction driver. Players with significant left-to-right ball flight issues may benefit more from models with built-in draw bias or offset.
Q: Is the POWER TITANIUM face conforming to USGA rules?
EPON designs all AF series drivers to conform to equipment rules for competitive play. The POWER TITANIUM face construction meets coefficient of restitution (COR) limits while delivering the performance and feel characteristics EPON targets.
Q: How does the 67g shaft weight affect performance?
A 67g shaft falls into the mid-weight category, suitable for swing speeds from approximately 90-110 mph. Lighter shafts (under 60g) typically benefit slower swing speeds, while heavier options (75g+) suit faster swingers or those seeking more control. The stock weight provides versatility for the typical AF-107 buyer profile.
Q: What is the difference between the AF-107 and AF-101?
While detailed specifications vary, EPON’s AF series evolution typically involves refinements to center of gravity positioning, face technology, and adjustability systems. The AF-107 represents a more recent design iteration. Specific comparative data requires consulting directly with EPON or authorized dealers.
Q: Should I choose 10° or 11° loft?
Loft selection depends primarily on swing speed, attack angle, and desired trajectory. Players with swing speeds below 100 mph or negative attack angles typically benefit from 11° to optimize launch. Faster swingers with upward attack angles may prefer 10° to control spin. The adjustability system provides fine-tuning regardless of base loft choice.
Q: How long does delivery take when ordering from Japan?
Delivery timeframes vary based on dealer, customs processing, and shipping method. Typical ranges span 2-6 weeks from order placement. Custom shaft configurations may extend this timeline. Confirm specific expectations with your chosen dealer.
Q: Is the AF-107 suitable for senior golfers?
Suitability depends more on swing speed and skill level than age. Senior golfers maintaining 95+ mph swing speeds with good ball-striking fundamentals can absolutely benefit from the AF-107. Those with slower swing speeds should explore shaft options lighter than the stock 67g configuration.
Final Assessment
The EPON AF-107 driver represents a distinctly different value proposition than mainstream equipment. It prioritizes craftsmanship, feel, adjustability, and consistency over marketing-driven distance claims and game-improvement forgiveness. For accomplished players who appreciate Japanese manufacturing standards and want a driver that rewards precise contact while offering tuning flexibility, the AF-107 delivers on these objectives.
The 460cc deep-face design with POWER TITANIUM forged face construction provides the foundation for consistent performance. The 8-position adjustable hosel system extends the driver’s versatility across different swing characteristics and course conditions. The mirror finish and Japanese assembly reflect attention to detail that appeals to players who view their equipment as precision instruments.
However, potential buyers must weigh these strengths against practical considerations. Limited availability outside Japan, premium pricing, and modest stock shaft options require commitment to the fitting and purchasing process. Players seeking maximum forgiveness, strong slice correction, or those with very slow swing speeds may find better-suited alternatives in the current market.
For the right player—typically skilled ball-strikers with 95-110+ mph swing speeds who value feel and shot-making—the AF-107 offers a compelling combination of performance and craftsmanship. The deep face design promotes solid launch conditions, while the forged face delivers the impact sensation that EPON has built its reputation upon in the Japanese market.
Those considering the AF-107 should invest in professional fitting to optimize both the hosel settings and shaft selection. This driver rewards the effort required to properly dial in its adjustability and match the shaft to your swing. When properly fitted to an appropriate player, the AF-107 can serve as a reliable, consistent performer that enhances confidence on the tee.
